Subject Vision

The mission of the Mathematics department is to ensure by 2018 Mathematics will be judged as outstanding by all stake holders and Ofsted.

Mathematics will exceed national standards for achievement and progress. The majority of lessons will be judged as outstanding and students will continue to make excellent progress.
The Mathematics department ensures we provide an environment where students can learn and become competent user of Mathematics and Mathematical application.

Mathematics is essential to everyday life, it is critical to Science, Technology and Engineering. The department will continue the development of students as Mathematical thinkers enabling them to become life learners.

Programme of study
We have adopted a 5 year curriculum that strengthens students from the offset covering all areas of Mathematics:

1. Algebra
2. Number
3. Shape, Space and Measure
4. Handling Data

Exams taken at GCSE
Mathematics is compulsory subject and all students are entered into GCSE level.
There are two tiers of assessments:

Higher tier – Grades 1-9 Foundation tier – Grades 1-5

Students will embark on the national curriculum based three year GCSE linear course.

The three year course covers Algebra, Ratio, Proportion, Number, Geometry, Statistics and Measure.

The GCSE qualification is assessed at the end of year 11 by 3 exams:
• Paper 1 – 1 hour 30 minutes (Non calculator)
• Paper 2 – 1 hour 30 minutes (Calculator)
• Paper 3 – 1 hour 30 minutes (Calculator)

A student’s work will also be assessed throughout the course and graded using the 9-1 grade structure.

Students who achieve the top grade of 8/9 will also have the opportunity to study for the IGCSE. This course is for students who wish to study A level Mathematics after leaving Unity College.

Personal Qualities that are required to study GCSE Mathematics:
• Good organisation by brining stationery, exercise books and homework to each lesson
• Self-discipline able to meet homework deadlines, revise for tests and practical mathematical skills
• Willingness to work hard and improve mathematical understanding
• Enthusiasm involvement in the exploration of activities and practical aspects of the subject

Achieving a GCSE in Mathematics
Mathematics is important for students in many other areas of study, particularly Science and Technology. It is important in everyday living, in any forms of employment and further education.

Time has been built into the key stage 4 scheme of work to allow for consolidation of units of study tailored by meeting the needs of each individual class. They will be regularly assessed throughout year 11 through a combination of formal mock assessments and weekly homework.

All teachers in the department offer revision and support sessions after school throughout year 11, every Tuesday after school. In the lead up to and during the examination season, further specific sessions are provided to ensure students are fully prepared for their GCSE exam.
