Physical Education

Physical Education

The Physical Education department at Unity College provides all learners with an outstanding experience of physical activity and sport. Our inclusive culture, built upon strong relationships between learners and staff, inspires the development of both physical and social confidence and encourages positive attitudes towards healthy and active lifestyles.

As a department we promote and incorporate the “School Games Values” of honesty, team work, passion, respect, determination and self belief. This is ensured through a diverse and inclusive curriculum which is provided by outstanding teaching and learning as well as exceptional facilities and resources. The curriculum itself has been coherently planned and designed to build on prior learning to ensure that our learners maximise their potential and can be the best that they can be.

Opportunities for physical activity and sport at Unity College go above and beyond timetabled lessons, which enables further promotion of lifelong participation in physical activity. At Unity College we are passionate about sport and provide an abundance of extra curricular activities and leadership opportunities to involve all learners. Our community club links are also utilised to ensure that learners have the opportunity to follow their passion and widen their own experiences.

Vocational Sport

The intent of Vocational Sport at Unity College is to ensure that pupils are provided with in-depth knowledge and understanding which builds upon that which has already been gained at Key Stage 3. The programme of study allows for learners to develop a deeper understanding of health, fitness and sport science, allowing for further study in vocational, technical or academic routes. The course is delivered in a way which encourages wider interest and creativity, whilst also developing essential skills such as time management and adherence to deadlines.

The curriculum itself has been coherently planned and designed to build on prior learning to ensure that our learners maximise their potential and can be the best that they can be.  Schemes of learning have been carefully designed to allow mastery in each unit.  Interleaving is central to this and students are provided with regular feedback to allow them to develop their knowledge and understanding of the different units that we cover. We aim for our students to become independent learners, planning and delivering lessons to accommodate this with regular assessments and time given to students for checking and adapting their work.

This qualification has been designed with practical and engaging ways of teaching in mind and enable learners to:
• develop a range of skills through involvement in sport and physical activity in different contexts and roles
• develop students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations • gain a better understanding of the complexity of different areas of sport and the sports industry
• increase their awareness of different ways to stay involved in sport and physical activity and of different careers and roles within sport

There are 3 units that will be delivered. These are:

R180: Reducing the risk of sports injuries (examination)

Students learn how to prepare participants to take part in physical activity so that they minimise the risk of injuries. They also learn how to respond to common sporting injuries and how to recognise the symptoms of some common medical conditions.

R181: Applying principles of training (coursework)

Students develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of training and how to keep performers in peak physical condition. They apply practical skills in fitness testing and in designing bespoke training programmes to suit individual requirements.

R183: Nutrition and sports performance (coursework)
