A visit from a local business
On Thursday 9th November 2017 a representative from a local company, Veka, and 3 German employees of the company, visited the MFL department at Unity College to talk with GCSE German students in years 9, 10 and 11. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to practise their German speaking and listening skills, whilst also learn about the life and culture of young people in Germany. Students were keen to participate in the event and suggested that they would love to meet more German natives in order to maximise their understanding of the German language and German culture.

Spanish Play
On Monday 27th November 2017 a group of year 11 GCSE Spanish students visited Westholme Senior School in Blackburn where they watched a performance by the Onatti Theatre Company. ‘La casa encantada’ (the haunted house) was performed in Spanish and captured the attention of the students. It was a fun experience whilst also providing the students with the opportunity to revise key GCSE Spanish vocabulary. Everyone enjoyed the performance and benefitted from experiencing the native speakers act out the play in an entertaining and fun manner.

Christmas Brunch
In December 2017, Year 7 and 8 Modern Foreign Languages students were invited to a ‘Christmas brunch’ where they were able to enjoy a taste of authentic French, German and Spanish cuisine. Students were also given target language cards and they were able to practise ordering food with the help of talented Year 10 and Year 11 student volunteers. Students also listened to foreign Christmas music which added to the ambiance in the Modern Foreign Languages Department. Students have already been asking their teachers about the next Languages breakfast.
