Well done Frankie Congratulations to Frankie-Leigh Forrest who has been appointed as the Barclays Girls Football Game Changer.  She will work across Burnley and Pendle to help bring about change and provide girls with equal access in not just football but all sports. Frankie is one of just 300 Game Changers working across the country.  Frankie will also lead and chair the Burnley and Pendle Girls Football Youth Steering Group. Frankie plays football for Unity College and out of school she plays for Great Harwood.  She is an outstanding sports person playing a wide range of sports including rugby, athletics

U13 Boys Lancashire Handball Finals

The U13’s boys team competed in the Lancashire Handball Finals on Friday 28th February at Clayton Green Sports Centre, Chorley. The final comprised of 9 teams who had all won their own competitions held within their respective towns. To qualify for the finals Unity had beat both Blessed Trinity and Sir John Thirsby. The final was organised into two pools. Unity were placed in Pool A alongside 4 other schools. To qualify for the semi finals, the top two teams from each group advanced. U12’s Rugby vs St Augustine’s

The year 7 boys’ rugby team travelled to St Augustine’s for their first fixture since their English schools festival in Preston.  After having a rucking/counter-rucking session in training led by the school’s year 10 boys, Unity began strongly with Jack Butler-Howarth turning to ball over before setting up Harry Sunter for blistering run down the wing to score in the corner. Harry then added his second try soon after with a similar run. U13 Boys’ Lancashire Bowl

The Under 13 boys’ rugby team took part in the Lancashire School’s Bowl competition last week, in testing weather conditions at Preston Grasshoppers RUFC. Due to several players unavailable the squad was made up of seven year 8’s and eight year 7’s, competing against teams of predominantly year 8 students.  The team’s first game was a loss to eventual competition winners Priestnall, whilst the boys battled well they were outdone by good running and some excellent cross field kicks. The team also had a narrow 2-1 loss to St Hilda’s before battling out a 1-1 draw in their third game

Unity Girls’ Rugby in Yorkshire

The Under 13 girls’ rugby team traveled across the Yorkshire border last week for a tournament against other Yorkshire schools. The tournament was held on Keighley Rugby Club’s all weather pitch and gave the girls the chance to challenge themselves against four other schools. After adverse weather and the Christmas holidays had prevented training since the start of December, the girls came up against a strong Whitcliffe side, showing resilience and determination but conceding two well worked tries to lose 2-1. U16s Girls Lancashire Cup Football

On Tuesday 3rd December, Unity College U16s (year 10 and 11s) participated in a Lancashire Cup football game against Our Lady and St John, Blackburn.  Unity won 4-0 and all girls played extremely well together.  Sophie Riley scored 2 goals, one from a corner and one from open play and Jaiden Hutchinson and Nellie Roberts also score 1 a piece.  Kaitlyn Gallery played extremely well and got players player of the match.  Demi-Lee Guest did fantastic in goal and managed to save some amazing shots on target.  Each player who participated in the game gave 100%.  Well done girls.  The

SEMI FINAL SPOT FOR U15 RUGBY

The U15 Lancashire Bowl quarter final saw Unity College face off against St Margeret’s Academy. The visiting Liverpool team had won the previous two meetings between the schools, with Unity needing to be at their best in order to compete.  Unity started strongly, with Daniel Maymond scoring in the corner after some early pressure, before adding a second between the posts shortly after. YEAR 7 RUGBY CONTINUE TO PROGRESS

Unity hosted their first year 7 event of the year, following the team’s visits to Preston Grasshoppers and Blackburn Central. The day saw teams from Blessed Trinity, Shuttleworth and Sir John Thursby attend, with Burnley Rugby coaches leading the event.  Unity College had 26 boys involved throughout the afternoon across two teams, with other regular attendees of training unavailable for the event. In the final rugby event of the season, Unity College’s Under 14 rugby team took part in a friendly sevens competition. The competition involved two Unity teams, two teams from Darwen Vale and a team apiece from St Augustine’s and Blessed Trinity.    Games were all played to an excellent standard, with a high quality of rugby and athleticism shown by all teams.
