Visit from a former student

Caitlin Sturgeon, former Unity College student and now professional actress, came into Unity College to talk to Year 9 and Year 10 students about her career so far and her plans for the future. She gave students an insight into what life is like in the world of the Arts and how they can learn from her experiences. Caitlin is a graduate of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. It was a wonderful experience and brilliant to catch up with Caitlin! We wish her well for the future.

Primary Maths Challenge

The first Burnley Primary Maths Challenge was held at Unity College on Friday 1st July. Eight Primary schools battled it out in rounds of problem solving, cross-number and logic. It was fantastic to see the students so enthused by Maths and eager to rise to the challenge. In third place was St Peters C of E, in second place was Briercliffe Primary School and in first place was Heasandford. Congratulations to all – you were amazing!

Year 7 bowling reward trip

65 year 7 students went to NFB Bowling on Friday 24th June. The students who went where invited due to their hard work and dedication within maths, they had taken part in additional activities above and beyond the classroom to improve their learning. Well done to all the year 7 and year 8 students who took part in the Happy Puzzle Company day on Friday 17th June. They had a thoroughly enjoyable time completing mathematical puzzles, working in teams and competing against each other. Bolton University STEM Event

On Monday 13 June 2022, 12 students from years 8 and 9 took part in a STEM event at Bolton University. The activities on offer allowed the students to gain hands on experience with real-life equipment such as medical equipment for checking heart rates and temperatures. They were also tasked with programming a robot and using an e-fit programme to construct a face as the police would when taking statements from eyewitnesses. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were able to gain an insight into the everyday applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Young Enterprise

A huge congratulations to our year 9 students who excelled at the Young Enterprise Lancashire County Competition with their business venture ‘From The Heart’. They were the youngest winning team out of the 25 teams which took part. The competition involved the team submitting a Business Report summarising their journey so far, attending an online Team Interview in front of a tough panel, and presenting to an audience of judges and fellow competitors at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston. We are immensely proud of their achievement of ‘Best Customer Service’ – well done!
