Speed Networking

On Friday 3rd February, all of Year 9 students participated in a speed networking event. We were joined by 20 professionals from a range of industries including healthcare, education, marketing, finance, law, business management, local government, armed forces, retail and engineering. Our visitors talked to small groups of students about their career paths and routes into their industries. The students asked a wide range of insightful questions and enjoyed the event thoroughly. We thank all of our visitors for the time they gave to support Unity students.

Carols on the balcony

As we broke up for Christmas we enjoyed our traditional carols on the balcony with year 11 entertaining the college with Christmas hits.

DNA

On Friday the 9th December 2022, Unity College hosted Quirky Bird Theatre Company who performed Dennis Kelly’s DNA. The performance was thought provoking and engaging and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Army Careers

On Monday 17 October, we were lucky enough to be joined by a team from the British Army .  Throughout the day,  a group of 30 Year 10 and 11 students engaged in a wide range of team-building, problem-solving activities and enjoyed a talk about Army Careers.  The students thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Young Writers’ Poetry Success

Unity College is proud to announce that one of our students has become a published poet! The Year 8 student has received a Headteacher award for this impressive achievement. Her poem was entered into the Young Writers’ Poetry Competition ‘Empowered’ in which young people, aged 11 to 18, were encouraged to write poetry which could shape someone’s life through language. Entrants to the competition were encouraged to write a poem about something that was important to them and provided them with the opportunity to express themselves freely and honestly, something which is so important for young adults. Visit from a former student

Caitlin Sturgeon, former Unity College student and now professional actress, came into Unity College to talk to Year 9 and Year 10 students about her career so far and her plans for the future. She gave students an insight into what life is like in the world of the Arts and how they can learn from her experiences. Caitlin is a graduate of the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. It was a wonderful experience and brilliant to catch up with Caitlin! We wish her well for the future.

Primary Maths Challenge

The first Burnley Primary Maths Challenge was held at Unity College on Friday 1st July. Eight Primary schools battled it out in rounds of problem solving, cross-number and logic. It was fantastic to see the students so enthused by Maths and eager to rise to the challenge. In third place was St Peters C of E, in second place was Briercliffe Primary School and in first place was Heasandford. Congratulations to all – you were amazing!
