Unity College Sporting Success 2017

Year 7 girls netball team, participated in the Burnley High Schools Tournament competing against Shuttleworth, Hameldon, Burnley High School, Sir John Thursby and Blessed Trinity. Both teams did exceptionally well, group 1, took first place, and group 2 took seconds place. A great start to the netball fixtures ladies. Unity College netball teams from year 7 & 8 took part in a large netball tournament held at Thomas Whitham Sixth Form. This was a successful afternoon where over 100 students from across Yorkshire, Pendle, Burnley and Blackburn participated in the event. U13’s girls Football team competed in the Premier League

Football Winners!

Girls u12 Football team played Ormskirk School last Friday, winning 2-1. Megan Rodriguez secured 2 goals overall, one in the first half and another in the second half of the game. The girls U12 will now go through to the second round of the Lancashire Cup. The teams Goalkeeper, Isobel Halton obtained the player of the match. A fantastic result ladies! Dancing Partners

Olivia Hickey and Jodie-Leigh Weller gave up a Sunday afternoon to spend entertaining the elderly people at Dove Court Nursing Home. Both girls are classical sequence dance partners and wowed everyone with their performance. They also spent time talking and dancing with the elderly people and staff at the nursing home. Employer Engagement Visit

This week we invited the RAF, The Royal Navy and BAE Systems to college to talk to year 7 and year 8 students.  We found out that only 10% of the engineers in the UK work force are female! The Unity College Science department want to inspire all of our students to be the very best they can be, especially if they can have really great careers in science and engineering!  We would love to get more of our female students interested careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thanks to all the year 7 parents who attended our coffee morning on Friday 29 September.  It was a great success and we raised £350 on the day!  Plus we are still raising money on our raffle table which ends tomorrow. The year 7 students did a great job in preparing, serving and tidying up!

Jamming with Raspberry Pi and Scoped Solutions!

During our transition period year 6 were lucky enough to work with a local specialist software company called Scoped Solutions, to learn how to code. Scoped Solutions gave students an insight into the real world of Computing and the importance of learning how to code. Year 6 were required to use their problem solving skills to debug errors in code and then learn how to develop it to make a Piano! Burnley Literary Festival

Year 9 student Sophia Redjeb has had a high profile role in helping to promote this year’s Burnley Literary Festival and has this week recorded a radio advert for 2BR to promote the Festival to young people.  The advert will run for 4 weeks and has gone live today! Sophia was extremely professional when she visited 2BR’s studios and has done an excellent job with the advert.  Sophia found the experience really useful as she’s interested in radio as a potential future career opportunity.  Well done Sophia!

Burnley Colour Dash!

On Sunday 10 September three Unity College students lined up with hundreds of others to run the Burnley Colour dash. Aaron Lundie (Year 11) Sophie Ashworth (Year 9) and Chloe Daniels (Year 7) were running to raise money for Pendleside Hospice. Sophie was the first girl to finish the 5k course and Aaron was second junior boy. All three had a fun and enjoyable run whilst having paint thrown at them!
