Athletics

Unity College Whitewash Unity College took all the accolades at the Burnley Schools year 7 and 8 athletics event. Unity dominated, with both teams; year 8s and year 7s winning both events. This means that both year 7 teams will progress to represent Burnley at the Lancashire School Games in Blackpool later in the term. Pupils came together to encourage each other through the field and track events and were a credit to the school both in terms of quality and attitude. The Unity College PE teachers were all extremely proud of all of their athletes.

Measles Outbreak

Message for parents/carers and guardians There are currently outbreaks of measles in several areas of the UK affecting unimmunised children and young adults, including 2 recent cases in Cumbria. There are also large outbreaks in several countries across Europe, including holiday destinations. Measles is highly infectious. It can cause serious illness and can sometimes be fatal. Vaccination with 2 doses of MMR is the safest way to protect children and young people. Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Students from Unity College are celebrating after completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Bronze Award requires each student to complete a volunteering, physical and skills section for at least 3 months; and a challenging two day self-supported expedition. 29 Unity College students have successfully completed the award, and currently 39 year 9 students are working to achieve the award this year. Some of the highlights include the following individual successes; representing Lancashire playing Golf, supporting Junior Parkrun, performing at Burnley Youth Theatre and organizing events around Burnley such as “The festival of Making”. Visit to the University of Manchester

On Friday 27th April, 12 year 10 students toured the University of Manchester. We met with current maths, medicine and biotechnology students and asked them about what university was really like. We were surprised about the range of courses on offer, the huge number of students and how many different buildings there were. At the University of Manchester there is a quidditch team! David Siko W3 – travelled to Ireland on 27th April 2018 to compete in the Ireland Wrestling championship for Lancashire and was undefeated. He became Irish Wrestling Champion. A massive achievement, well done David!

MFL Activities

A visit from a local business On Thursday 9th November 2017 a representative from a local company, Veka, and 3 German employees of the company, visited the MFL department at Unity College to talk with GCSE German students in years 9, 10 and 11. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to practise their German speaking and listening skills, whilst also learn about the life and culture of young people in Germany. Lesley Garrett Performance

The Unity College Choir were recently invited to perform with Lesley Garrett at the Guild Hall in Preston for a Northern Christmas Prom. Students were joined by another twoother schools from across the North West to sing a range of Christmas carols and songs with Lesley Garrett and the Northern Philharmonic Orchestra. Students had a fantastic time and were able to meet Lesley after the performance for a chat, autographs and photos.
