YEAR 7 RUGBY CONTINUE TO PROGRESS

Unity hosted their first year 7 event of the year, following the team’s visits to Preston Grasshoppers and Blackburn Central. The day saw teams from Blessed Trinity, Shuttleworth and Sir John Thursby attend, with Burnley Rugby coaches leading the event.  Unity College had 26 boys involved throughout the afternoon across two teams, with other regular attendees of training unavailable for the event. Numbers at training so far have been exceptional, with a strong base to develop over the coming years.  Over the afternoon the boys played a combination of touch and contact rugby, to ensure that all teams were able

Belgium Concert Tour – Day 4

Everyone was up and packed in time for an early breakfast at 7:30am. The coach was loaded and the hotel cleaned ahead of our planned departure time. We then headed back to Calais to catch the shuttle. After an uneventful journey we arrived early at Gillingham for a lunch break and a chance to go ice skating.  Both experienced and novice skaters enjoyed themselves on the ice. We then had the long trek home through Friday afternoon rush hour.  All were kept entertained for a while watching The Greatest Showman. We arrived safely back at school a bit later than

Belgium Concert Tour – Day 3

After breakfast, we had a lovely cruise along the canal seeing some of the old bridges and buildings of Brugge. Then we headed off to Ypres for our afternoon concert. This took place outside the old cloth hall (now the Flanders museum).  To a fluctuating audience of around 50, the percussion ensemble, the choir and a few soloists performed in very windy conditions. This was a much more relaxed atmosphere and was thoroughly enjoyed by both performers and audience alike. At 8pm we joined the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and then headed back to the hotel.

After a very wet morning shopping in Brugge, we headed to De Panne for our first concert. The percussion ensemble, the choir and a number of soloists performed superbly to an audience of over 150 people. We had a lovely meal at the Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk restaurant and then we went bowling.  Mr Holden and Mrs Wilson were drawn top at the end of the game. Bowl Inn kindly allowed them an extra round each, and Mrs Wilson was victorious.

We headed into the centre of town for lunch and then onto the ‘Choco Story’, where we discovered the 4000 year history of chocolate, from the sacrifices of the mayans to modern day chocolates. After the evening meal at the hotel, we had a full rehearsal. All is sounding good for tomorrow’s concert!

VIY and Offshoots

On Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th of October, 15 Unity College students undertook a community project in collaboration with VIY and Offshoots in Towneley Park. Over the course of the two days students built 3 potting tables, 2 benches and 2 mud kitchens for use at the project. These have now all been donated to Offshoots to use with their volunteer and childminder groups. Their work was of a very high standard and they produced far more high quality end products than initially planned. Students gained valuable skills in joinery and work place health and safety with many of them
